Moeller Extends Streak With Big Road Win

The combination of balanced scoring, strength inside and solid defense enabled Moeller to record a 50-29 victory over La Salle Friday night in a basketball games between the city’s top-ranked teams before a sellout crowd at La Salle High School.  The victory was the Crusaders’ sixth straight and extended Moeller’s GCL South run to 12 consecutive games dating back to Feb. 17, 2012, when La Salle beat Moeller, 42-34.

Moeller (12-1, 2-0 GCL South), No. 1 in The Enquirer’s latest Division I coaches’ poll, raced to a 10-2 lead and extended the margin to 29-9 by halftime.  Junior center Nate Fowler, senior forward Jack Anton and senior guard Tre’ Hawkins each scored 10 points for Moeller, which outrebounded No. 2 La Salle, 31-14, and benefited from the Lancers missing all 18 shots they took from three-point range.

La Salle (11-2, 1-1), which had won five straight games heading into Friday, was led by sophomore guard Jeremy Larkin – who finished with a team-high 12 points.  Senior forward Jeffrey Larkin, who returned Tuesday after missing the Lancers’ first 11 games with a knee injury, came off the bench to score nine for La Salle – which had split the previous 20 meetings with Moeller.

The Crusaders – No. 4 in this week’s Associated Press Division I state poll - will attempt to win their fourth game in seven days, when they face Toledo St. John’s Jesuit (11-2) at 6 p.m. Sunday at Moeller High School.  Before Friday’s victory at La Salle, Moeller beat Winton Woods and Centerville on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.  La Salle’s next game is Tuesday, January 21, at No. 8 Mason (9-3) from the Greater Miami Conference.  Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
