St. Xavier, Moeller Swim 1-2 in SW Ohio Classic

GCL South member schools St. Xavier and Moeller claimed the top two spots in the annual Southwest Ohio Swimming and Diving Championships that concluded Sunday evening with the remaining swimming finals at Keating Natatorium on St. Xavier’s campus.  The Bombers wound up with a team total of 614.5 points to finish ahead of Moeller, which had 303 points – buoyed by a record-setting performance from sophomore Cooper Hodge.

Hodge finished  the 200-meter individual medley in 1:50.54, setting a meet record.  Hodge’s time eclipsed that of former Roger Bacon standout Jerry Frentsos, whose record time of 1:52.09 had stood since 1984.  Hodge also captured the 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley on Saturday.  The Crusaders took titles in two relay races, too, winning both the 200 and 400 medley relays.

St. Xavier, which has fielded the most dominant boys’ swimming program in Ohio for years, had three individuals win four events  – Luke Sobolewsi, capturing the 50 butterfly and 100 individual medley; Mitchell Frey, the 100 freestyle; and Joshua Fogarty, the 50 breaststroke.  St. Xavier also won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

La Salle junior Sam Redd won the 50 backstroke with a time of 26.31 seconds.
