Elder Rallies To Knock Off La Salle At The Pit

Trailing by as many as 22 points midway through the third quarter and 17 just seconds into the final period, Elder turned up its defensive pressure to post a series of runs, including scoring the game’s final nine points, en route to a GCL South basketball victory over La Salle, 62-58, at The Pit Friday night.  The Panthers (11-4, 2-1 GCL South) got a team-high 18 points from senior Devin Pike and 16 from junior Brad Miller.

Sophomore guard Joey Sabato scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to help Elder snap an 11-game losing streak to La Salle (11-3, 1-2).  Elder’s last victory over the Lancers came in the final regular-season game of the 2007-08 season.  The Panthers used a 14-point spurt and an 18-2 run in the second half to come back, but still needed to score the game’s final nine points after La Salle had reclaimed a 58-53 lead.

Senior guard Tim Bell paced La Salle, ranked No. 2 in The Enquirer’s latest Division I coaches’ poll.  The Lancers – weather permitting – hit the road tonight to face Clayton Northmont in a non-conference game.  Tipoff is at 7:30.  No. 6 Elder stays closer to home, but still is on the road – against longtime neighborhood rival Western Hills (x-x).  Tipoff of that game also is scheduled for 7:30.
