Moeller Extends Streaks, Stays Atop GCL South

Like Elder, Moeller needed a late rally on Friday night – outscoring St. Xavier, 19-7, in the fourth quarter to defeat the Bombers, 52-48, at Moeller.  The comeback enabled Moeller to win its eighth consecutive game and extend its GCL South streak to 13 games dating back on February 2012.  Senior forward Grant Benzinger led the Crusaders (14-1, 3-0 GCL South) with 17 points – including 8-of-8 from the free-throw line.

St. Xavier (7-8, 0-3) appeared primed to upset Moeller, No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Division I coaches’ poll since the preseason, behind Roderick Mills (13 points) and Jack Westerfield (12) – who combined to score 25 of the Bombers’ points.   St. Xavier led by two at halftime, 27-25, and extended the margin to 41-33 after three quarters, but Moeller was able to rally - aided by going 16-of-20 from the free-throw line.

The Crusaders look to make it nine wins in a row tonight, when they travel to face Aiken in a non-conference game.  Tipoff is 7, weather permitting.  St. Xavier is the lone GCL South team without a game tonight.  The Bombers return to action next Friday, January 31, when they travel to La Salle.
