La Salle High School basketball coach Dan Fleming is one of only 53 remaining finalists as USA TODAY High School Sports continues its search for America’s best boys’ high school basketball coach.  Fleming is one of six active coaches chosen in Ohio after USA TODAY contacted local media and state and school officials to get their insight.  The contest, which began with 306 names, is currently in the regional round.  Winners from each state and the District of Columbia, along with two wild-card winners that received the most votes nationally without winning their state, are still in contention.

Fans will determine the ultimate winner via online voting.  Regional voting ends at midnight tonight.  The national round voting begins Friday and runs through February 7.  The athletic department of the winning coach, calculated off of the number of votes received in the finals, will be awarded $2,000.  Second through fifth-place finishers also will  receive cash prizes for their schools.  Here is the link for anyone interested in casting their vote:

Fleming’s record at La Salle is 374-181 in 24 seasons, including a 58-21 mark in the postseason and a 159-110 record against GCL competition.  His Lancer teams have won five GCL championships, two city titles, six district crowns, two regional and two state championships – winning Ohio Division I  state championships in 1996 and 2011.  He is a five-time GCL South coach of the year, and La Salle’s record since the 2008-09 season is 125-21, an .856 winning percentage, including 42-11 in the GCL.  The Lancers have made the regional finals four of the last five seasons.
