What once seemed like little more than a trek to better weather to pursue a lifetime dream now is a real possibility for Barrett Cohen, a 1993 La Salle High School graduate who is general manager of WLSN, the GCL South school’s broadcast network.  That’s because Cohen left for San Diego on Friday as one of only 20 semifinalists vying to become the public address announcer for the Major League Baseball San Diego Padres.

Cohen, who first ventured to San Diego and Petco Park last month along with 800-plus other PA hopefuls for the first round of tryouts, made the initial cut.  So, he is at the Padres’ Fanfest this weekend for the second round of tryouts.  The six finalists are expected to announced this week.  The PA announcer will be chosen in March after the finalists handle PA duties at Padres Spring Training in Peoria, Az.

Anyone attending a La Salle home football game in recent years has no doubt heard Cohen – the voice of the Lancers who has created a ESPN-like GameDay atmosphere broadcasting his pregame show either from the stadium parking lots or inside Lancer Stadium.   As a result, Cohen has received plenty of support from the La Salle community as he pursues a dream of being a PA announcer for an MLB team.
