St. Xavier and Moeller, buoyed by dominance of the relay events, captured the top two spots in in the Southwest Ohio Division I District Swimming & Diving Championships that concluded Friday evening at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center on the campus of Miami University in Oxford.  St. Xavier, which is vying for its sixth straight state championship, finished with a meet-best 450 points, followed by Moeller with 271.

St. Xavier won both the 200- and 400-meter freestyle relays, with Moeller finishing in second in both races.  The Crusaders then captured the 200 medley relay, with St. Xavier coming in second.  The top two finishers in both individual and relay events qualify for the 2014 Ohio High School Athletic Association State Championships on February 19-22 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Youth was definitely well served in the district finals for both St. Xavier and Moeller, which finished in the same order during last week’s sectional championships.  Freshman Grant House of St. Xavier and sophomore Cooper Hodge of Moeller each finished first in two individual events while helping their schools’ respective relay teams capture all three races.

House won the 100 and 200 freestyle events with times of :45.12 and 1:37.8, respectively, and also swam legs of the victorious 200 and 400 free relays.  Hodge won the 100 breaststroke with a time of :57.21, and also won the 200 individual medley, finishing in 1:49.83.  Hodge then was a member of the Crusaders’ winning 200 medley relay team.

The GCL South will be well represented in diving at the state championships too.  Elder’s Mitch Godar, coming off a victory in the sectional diving meet, took first in the district finals held Tuesday night at Miami University.  Godar finished with 432.60 points to earn a trip to Canton.  He will be joined by Drew Fitzgerald of St. Xavier, who came in sixth with 338.90 points.  The top seven district finishers qualify for the state meet.
