Moeller and Elder capped the GCL South basketball regular season with road victories on Saturday night, in the process building momentum heading into their respective Division I sectional tournament games later this week.  Moeller knocked off St. Xavier, 63-33, to cap a perfect season in the GCL South and extend its winning streak to 13 games, while Elder claimed sole possession of second place in the division with a 56-53 win over La Salle.

Moeller (19-1), ranked No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Division I coaches’ poll all season, got a huge night from senior forward Grant Benzinger – who came off the bench to score a season-high 28 points – hitting 8-of-13 field goals, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, and converting all seven free throws.  The Crusaders outrebounded St. Xavier (8-12), 28-16, and held the Bombers to just 11 field goals to remain unbeaten in 2014.

Elder (15-6) needed a victory to finish in sole possession of second place in the GCL South, and the Panthers were able to pick up a big road win thanks to balanced scoring (four players in double figures) paced by sophomore guard Frankie Hofmeyer’s 14 points, including four of his team’s five three-pointers.  Senior guard Tim Bell paced La Salle (15-5) with 22 points, while senior guard Jeffrey Larkin added 12.
