Wednesday was quite a memorable day for GCL South bowling, as all four member schools turned in strong performances in their respective sectional tournaments – finishing in the top seven spots to earn berths in next Thursday’s Southwest Ohio Division I Bowling Championships at Beaver-Vu Lanes in Beavercreek.

St. Xavier won the sectional championship at Crossagate Lanes, while La Salle – which began the Baker round in seventh place – finished strong to come in second, and Moeller finished fifth.  Elder was third in the sectional at Colerain Bowl.  The top seven teams in each sectional earned a berth to districts.

Moeller senior Grant Godbey finished second overall at Crossgate, with a three-game series of 693.  St. Xavier senior Kevin Polking, who entered the postseason with the highest average among GCL South bowlers at 214.9, finished with a three-game series of 675 to finish third overall at Crossgate.  Other GCL South bowlers to finish among the top 10 at Crossgate were Matt Nichols, La Salle, 638 (sixth); Philip Cleves, Moeller, 634 (seventh); Ben Weinberger,  St. Xavier, 624 (ninth); and Tony Platz, Moeller, 616 (10th).

It also was a record-setting day for senior Josh Guy of Elder, who rolled a school-record 767 series – posting games of 258, 267 and 242 to finish first at Colerain Bowl.  After the sectionals, Guy now has the highest average in the GCL South, at 216.4 per game over 38 games.  Teammate Nick Roth, also a senior, wound up in 10th place with a 610.

The top five teams and top five individuals at the district tournament will qualify for the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Bowling Championships, scheduled for Saturday, March 1, at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.  District play is scheduled to begin Thursday morning at Beaver-Vu Lanes, located at 1238 North Fairfield Road in Beavercreek.
