St. Xavier State Swimming Champ Again; Moeller Third

Two of the top three spots in Saturday’s Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I State Swimming and Diving Championships were claimed by GCL South member schools, with St. Xavier leaving Canton with its sixth state title in a row and state crown No. 35 in the Aquabombers’ storied history.  GCL member Moeller finished a strong third after Saturday’s finals, with only Toledo St. Francis De Sales between the two schools.

St. Xavier finished with 255 points, followed by Toledo St. Francis (238) and Moeller (179).

St. Xavier freshman Grant House captured two individual state championships, winning the 100- and 200-meter freestyle events, and then helped St. Xavier’s relay team win the 400 freestyle event at the C.T. Branin Natatorium.  House finished the 100 free in a winning time of :44.26, covered the 200 free in 1:35.84, and then swam a leg of his team’s winning 400 free relay time of 3:05.28.

Joining House on the Aquabombers’ state champion relay team were Mitchell Frey, Michael Montague and Matthew Slabe.   St. Xavier also turned in a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (Frey, House, Grant Carr and Adam Kranbuhl), finishing in 1:23.65, and claimed second in the 200 medley relay (Carr, Kranbuhl, Oliver Acomb and James Wray), with a time of 1:33.5.

Moeller got another standout performance by sophomore Cooper Hodge, who came in second in the 200 individual medley (1:50.42) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (:57.29), while Crusaders senior Greg Nymberg was third in the 100 butterfly (:49.87) and junior Kevin George came in third in the 500 freestyle (3:32.26).  Moeller’s 200 medley relay team of Hodge, Nymberg, Jake Peloquin and Tory Worobetz) came in fourth, at 1:34.05.

Elder senior Mitch Godar turned in an impressive sixth-place finish in the 1-meter diving competition, which was held on Thursday evening.  Godar, the district champion, registered a score of 460.15.  For the complete state swimming and diving results, visit www.swimmeet.com.
