St. Xavier Attempts To Make It 4-for-4 In Hoops Semis

St. Xavier will attempt to join its three GCL South basketball counterparts and advance to the sectional final, when the Bombers meet Fairfield in the Cincinnati 1 Sectional semifinals at 7:30 tonight at Lakota West High School.   Elder, La Salle and Moeller, which is ranked No. 1 in both the city and state regular-season polls, all advanced to their respective sectional finals with convincing victories in games played Tuesday night.  St. Xavier (9-12) will have to get past No. 3-seed Fairfield (18-4), winner of eight straight games, to make its sectional final.

Moeller (21-1), the No. 1 seed in the Cincinnati 2 Sectional, ran its winning streak to 15 games with a 50-34 win over Western Hills at Lakota West.  Senior guard Grant Benzinger led the Crusaders with 15 points, while senior forward Jack Anton added 14 and junior center Nate Fowler chipped in 10.  Moeller, which is undefeated in 2014, advances to the sectional final against No. 8-seed Lakota East, which beat Little Miami, 75-43, in Tuesday’s other semifinal game.  Tipoff is 7 p.m. Friday at Xavier University’s Cintas Center.

Elder also advanced to the Cintas Center Friday evening, posting a season high in scoring in an 84-61 win over Hamilton in the Cincinnati 4 Sectional semifinals at Fairfield.  Junior guard Brad Miller paced the Panthers (17-6) with 18 points, while senior forward Devin Pike posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Sophomore guard Frankie Hofmeyer added 13 off the bench, and sophomore Peyton Ramsey had nine points, seven rebounds and seven assists.  Elder advances to meet No. 5-seed Middletown  (17-6), a 64-53 winner over Winton Woods Tuesday.

Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Cintas Center.

La Salle made it a perfect 3-for-3 for the GCL South in Tuesday’s sectional semis, as the No. 2-seed Lancers rolled to a 76-36 victory over Edgewood in the Cincinnati 5 Sectional at Hamilton.  Sophomore guard Jeremy Larkin led La Salle with 13 points in limited action, and senior guard Tim Bell added seven assists.  La Salle (17-5) advances to meet No. 7-seed Mason (14-6), which defeated Turpin, 54-36, on Tuesday, in the sectional final.  Tipoff is 8:30 Friday at the Cintas Center, the third of three games that evening at Xavier involving GCL South schools.
