Senior forward Roderick Mills recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for St. Xavier as the Bombers fell to No. 3-seed Fairfield, 50-37, in the Cincinnati 1 Sectional basketball semifinals Wednesday night at Lakota West High School.  Fairfield (19-4), co-champs of the Greater Miami Conference with Middletown and winner of nine straight games, advances to meet Withrow, which beat Walnut Hills in the semifinals, in the sectional final at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Xavier University’s Cintas Center.

St. Xavier struggled offensively early and trailed 12-5 at the end of the first quarter.  The Bombers, who also got eight points from junior guard Jack Westerfield, were unable to get it going from long range – hitting just 3-of-15 three-pointers.  St. Xavier is the first GCL South team to be eliminated in the basketball postseason.  Elder, La Salle and Moeller all are preparing for their respective sectional finals Friday night at the Cintas Center, with the three teams playing back-to-back-to-back in games at 5:30 (Elder vs. Middletown), 7 (Moeller vs. Lakota East) and 8:30 (La Salle vs. Mason).

Tickets to Friday’s sectional finals are $6 in advance and available at the participating schools.  Tickets are $7 at the gate.  Tickets are good for all three games tomorrow night.
