The GCL South Track and Field Championships continue this afternoon at La Salle High School’s Lancer Stadium.  The meet, held in conjunction with the GGCL schools, will begin at 4 p.m. with finals  in the pole vault.  The remaining field events (long jump, high jump, shot put and discus) are set to begin at 4:30.  Despite having to wait through a 45-minute delay because of inclement weather Wednesday, all of the preliminaries were able to be completed in sprints and hurdles, along with the finals 3,200-meter relay and Junior Varsity / Freshman 3,200m run.

All running events are set to begin at 5 p.m. with each division proceeding in the following order:  Junior Varsity girls, Varsity girls, Freshman boys, Junior Varsity boys, and Varsity boys.  La Salle is the defending GCL South champion, while McAuley won the GGCL title last spring.  Lancers coach Frank Russo was named the GCL South Coach of the Year, with Tim Bell or La Salle and Michael Hall of St. Xavier named the GCL South Athletes of the Year.  Ron Russo, Frank’s brother, was named the GGCL Coach of the Year for leading McAuley to the title, while Haley Baker of Mercy (field) and Annie Hefferman of St. Ursula (runner) were named GGCL Athletes of the Year.
