GCL South Golf Teams All Qualify For Districts

A day after the Moeller golf team captured the Cincinnati East Sectional Championship, La Salle, St. Xavier and Elder claimed three of the top four spots in the Cincinnati West Sectional Tournament played Wednesday at Miami Whitewater Forest Golf Course to qualify as teams for the Division I Southwest District Tournament scheduled for Thursday, October 9, at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown.

La Salle senior Daniel Wetterich fired an even-par 71 to finish as the sectional medalist and help the Lancers to the sectional championship, with a team score of 307 – winning the sectional title as a the result of a tiebreaker over St.. Xavier, which also finished with a 307.  Fairfield came in third with a 321, followed by Elder’s 324, as the Panthers secured the fourth and final team berth the districts.

It was an impressive day all around for GCL South golfers – who claimed the top five individual finishers in the tournament, with sophomore Joey McCarthy of St. Xavier second with a 4-over 75, and La Salle’s Zach Smith, along with St. Xavier’s Domenic Maricocchi and Kirran Magowan, tying for third place, with rounds of 5-over 76.  Aaron Held of Elder and La Salle’s Brady Heidemann finished tied for eighth, at 8-over 79.

Overall, the GCL South teams had 11 of the top 14 individual finishers – including Kurt Fortman and Tanner Lockwood of Elder, along with Jayson Heidemann of La Salle, who finished with 81s to tie for 12th place.  Here are the other scores from members of the three qualifying GCL South teams:  La Salle (Will Efkeman, 83); St. Xavier (Cameron Frazier, 80; Paul Maricocchi, 84); and Elder (Josh Rhoads, 83; Drew Schramm, 89).
