Moeller, the GCL South champion this year, and St. Xavier, which edged the Crusaders to win last week’s district tournament in a sudden-death playoff, are set to tee it up tomorrow morning in the first round of the two-day Ohio High School Athletic Association Boys’ Division I Golf Championships to be played at The Ohio State University Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus.

Moeller will start on Scarlet No. 1 at 9 a.m., with St. Xavier teeing off on Scarlet No. 10 at 9:56.  Will Efkeman of La Salle, who qualified as an individual after firing a 3-over 75 at district, will begin on No. 10 at 9:40.  Second-round play is set for Saturday.  A year ago, St. Xavier – led by a fifth-place finish from Kirran Magowan – came in third as a team, while Moeller was just two spots behind in fifth place.

Both schools advanced to state with a 1-2 finish at last week’s Southwest District Golf Championships at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown.  Both finished with team scores of 303 and, after still being tied after the standard tiebreaker, the top four golfers from each team went to a sudden-death playoff – which was won by St. Xavier.  La Salle narrowly missed earning one of the top three qualifying team spots, finishing fourth, at 315.

Seven GCL South golfers finished in the top 11 at the district tournament, led by Magowan, who claimed medalist honors with a 1-over 73.  Other top finishers were Quinn Sullivan and Jake Fox of Moeller, who tied for third, with 75s; Efkeman, who finished sixth, with a 75; and Nick Gruber of Moeller, along with St. Xavier’s Domenic Maricocchi and Cameron Frazier, who all tied for eighth, with 76s.

Elder, which was led by junior Kurt Fortman, who tied at No. 12 with a 77, finished seventh in the team standings, with a 322.
