All GCL South Teams Qualify For Regional CC

Just like one week earlier in the GCL South Cross Country Championships, St. Xavier’s Michael Vitucci and Brad Eagan finished 1-2 in Saturday’s Southwest District Championships at Voice of America Park in West Chester, helping the GCL South champion Bombers finish first in the 16-team Division I-A group.  Elder came in third as a team, also earning the Panthers a spot in Saturday’s regional meet in Troy.

La Salle and Moeller, running in the Division I-B grouping at Voice of America Park, came in third and fourth, respectively, to earn berths in the Division I, Region 4 Cross Country Championships to be held at Troy Memorial Stadium.   The top four teams in each of the Division I groups advance to the regional meet.  La Salle finished with 118 points, followed by Moeller at 154.   Mason (19) and Sycamore (92) took the top two spots.

St,. Xavier, the defending state champion, finished first with 30 points.  The Bombers were followed in its group by Lakota East, 34; Elder, 88; and Turpin, 93.  Vitucci covered the 3.1-mile course in 16:26.64, followed by teammate Eagan at 15:40.71.  Matt Osubor of St. Xavier, who came in fourth at the GCL South meet, was fifth with a time of 16:02.03; Elder’s Michael Huschart came in seventh, at 16:07.19; with freshman Justin Grender of St. Xavier in eighth, at  16:20.00.  Grender was the Junior Varsity winner at last Saturday’s GCL South meet.

In the Division I-B race, Moeller senior Mitch Poch turned in the best finish among GCL South runners.  Poch finished in eighth place with a time of 16:20.60.  Michael Campbell of La Salle, who came in fifth just ahead of Poch in the GCL South meet held on ST. Xavier’s campus, came in ninth, at 16:21.49.
