Cleveland St. Ignatius jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the second quarter, turning two Moeller miscues into touchdowns, and then held off the Crusaders for a 34-20 victory Saturday night at Dublin Coffman High School in Columbus. Anthony Corte of St. Ignatius (5-2) returned a fumble 50 yards for the game’s first score, and then Michael Matthews recovered a punt for a TD to give the Wildcats a 28-0 lead late in the second quarter.
Moeller (6-2), No. 6 in the Ohio Associated Press Division I state poll entering the game, attempted to rally behind senior quarterback Matt Crable - whose 48-yard TD pass to junior tight end Jake Hausmann with 3:11 remaining in the third quarter cut the deficit to 28-13. Junior tailback Demetrius Yett scored two TDs for Moeller, including a 45-yard scoring run late in the first half, but it wasn’t enough.
It doesn’t get any easier for the two-time defending state champion Crusaders, who close the season with games against Ohio’s No. 9-ranked team in Lakewood St. Edward (6-2). Kickoff is 4 p.m. Saturday at Lockland Memorial Stadium. Then, Moeller closes the regular season by hosting perennial Kentucky power Louisville Trinity (5-4) at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 31. Moeller has still never beaten St. Ignatius, falling to 0-5 in the all-time series.
