The St. Xavier soccer team extended its winning streak to 12 games by recording its sixth consecutive shutout Monday, 1-0, over GCL South colleague Elder in the Cincinnati Section 4 Championship at Lakota East High School.  St. Xavier (15-2-1) advances to the Division I Southwest District Tournament and will play the winner of tonight’s Dayton Section 3 final between Northmont and Vandalia Butler at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lakota East High School.

After a scoreless first half, the game was delayed for approximately 40 minutes because of lightning in the area.  It appeared the match might be headed to overtime, but senior Drew Eagan scored off a miss by Zachary Thomas with seven minutes remaining for what turned out to be the game’s lone goal.  Senior Henry Stutz was again in goal for the Bombers.

Elder (7-8-2) is the last team to defeat the Bombers, winning 1-0 at the Panther Athletic Complex back on September 6.  St. Xavier then defeated Elder, 3-1, at St. Xavier during its current winning streak, that victory coming on September 23.   During its streak, the Bombers have allowed just two goals in the 12 games – one against Elder and the other in a 2-1 victory at Covington Catholic on September 25.  The other 10 wins have been via shutouts.

Moeller’s season also came to an end Monday, when the Crusaders (8-7-3) lost to Walnut Hills, 2-0, in the Cincinnati Section 5 final at Winton Woods.  Moeller was hoping to avenge a 2-1 loss to Eastern Cincinnati Conference champion Walnut hills in the season opener in late August.
