St. Xavier Extends FB Winning Streak To Four

St. Xavier parlayed a strong rushing game and a sound defense into a 24-10 victory over Cleveland St. Ignatius Saturday afternoon at St. Xavier, giving the Bombers their fourth consecutive victory over a team with at least six wins and strengthening their hold on one of the top spots in the Division I, Region 2 Harbin computer ratings.  St. Xavier was third in the regional rankings  entering the game with St. Ignatius.

Senior Ben Glines led St. Xavier’s rushing attack, picking up 72 of his team’s 202 yards rushing against St. Ignatius (6-3), ranked No. 9 in the Associated Press Division I state poll. Senior Ronnie Fricke added 44 yards on the ground, including a 15-yard TD run in the fourth quarter that gave his team a two-TD advantage.  No. 10 St. Xavier (7-2) did the rest on defense, limiting the Wildcats to just 10 first downs and forcing two turnovers.

The Bombers’ defense was led by junior defensive back J.P. Bitzenhofer, who had a team-high seven total tackles and also intercepted a pass.  Senior linebacker Justin Hilliard, an Ohio State University commit, had six total tackles, a forced a fumble and a sack, while St. Xavier held St. Ignatius to an average of 0.7 yards per rush, while also limiting the Wildcats to just 3 of 12 conversions on third down and 0 or 3 on fourth down.

Like St. Xavier, Moeller was attempting to defeat a Northeast Ohio perennial power Saturday afternoon at Lockland Memorial Stadium and, in the process, become the second GCL South team this season to beat Lakewood St. Edward.  Elder knocked off the Eagles, 21-14, on September 20, when St. Edward was ranked No. 1 nationally by at least one prep football publication.

Moeller, however, couldn’t overcome five turnovers in a 24-10 loss to St. Edward, No. 8 in the latest AP Division I state rankings.  The Eagles broke open a 10-3 game with two TDs in the second quarter, the first coming on a 32-yard interception return by Matt Carandang to make it 17-3, and then a 4-yard run by Andrew Dowell gave the Eagles a 24-3 halftime lead. St. Edward (7-2) intercepted four passes in the game.

The loss was the third in the last four games for Moeller (6-3), the two-time defending state champions who started the season 5-0 and had an 11-game winning streak alive before falling to La Salle, 34-9, four weeks ago.  The Crusaders are in solid playoff position, ranked No. 5 in last week’s Region 2 Harbin computer ratings.  Moeller ends the regular season Friday by playing Louisville Trinity Friday night at Lockland Stadium.
