GCL South FB Teams in Good Playoff Standing

All four GCL South football teams are in good standing heading into Friday’s final regular-season games.  St. Xavier, winner of four consecutive games, has moved to the No. 1 position in the latest Division I, Region 2 Harbin computer ratings released Tuesday.  The top 16 teams from the two Division I regions advance to the state playoffs, with the top eight schools hosting first-round games.

The Bombers (7-2), who are ranked No. 8 in this week’s Associated Press Division I state rankings, host Louisville St. Xavier at 7 Friday.  Moeller and Elder also are in good positions in Region 2.  Moeller (6-3), despite losses in three of its last four games, is No. 9 this week.  The Crusaders host Louisville Trinity in their regular-season finale at 7 Friday at Lockland Memorial Stadium.

Elder (6-3), winners of its last two games, is up to No. 11.  The Panthers, fresh off their victory at Highlands last Friday, host La Salle at 7:30pm p.m. Friday in a game that will determine which schools are GCL South champions.  Moeller and St. Xavier already have clinched a tie for the GCL South crown, and the Lancers can make it a three-way deadlock with a victory over the Panther at The Pit.

La Salle, which has lost only once this season (24-21 to St. Xavier on a last-second field goal), still holds the No. 1 spot in the Division II, Region 6 Harbin ratings after nine games. The Lancers undoubtedly will maintain that position with a win at Elder.  Even with a loss, La Salle is almost certain to host a first-round state playoff game on Friday, November 7. The Lancers are ranked No. 4 in this week’s AP Division II state poll.
