St. Xavier senior Michael Vitucci capped an outstanding running career by winning the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I State Cross Country Championships Saturday afternoon, covering the 5K course at National Trail Raceway in Hebron with a time of 15:34.53, with mile splits of 5:00.8, to help the Bombers finish third in the overall team standings, with 141 points.  Mason finished first, with 121.

Vitucci, who finished eighth at last year’s state meet to help St. Xavier win its fourth state cross country title (also winning in 1998, 2000 and 2003), came into the race having won four consecutive races – including finishing first at the Greater Catholic League South, district and regional meets over the last three weekends.  In all, Vitucci won seven races this season and, as a result, was recently named the GCL South Runner of the Year.

Classmate Brad Eagan, who finished second at the GCL and district meets and then came in third at regionals, finished at No. 10 with a time of 15:50.15.  The other Bomber runners also turned in solid performances:  senior Matt Osubor (49), 16:21.40; freshman Justin Grender (68), 16:38.15; senior Gabe West (79), 16:45.69; senior Cole Grabowski (86), 16:50.69; and sophomore Chris Reischel (118), 17:09.36.
