La Salle, which notched its first playoff win last Friday, looks to continue its postseason run against Harrison in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II, Region 6 state football playoffs tonight.  The Lancers (10-1), winners of four straight and the region’s No. 1 seed, play Harrison (8-3) in a regional quarterfinal game.  Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Hamilton High School’s Virgil Schwarm Stadium.

GCL South members Moeller and St. Xavier will play Saturday.

Coach Nate Moore’s Lancers racked up nearly 500 yards total offense in a 48-28 win over Glen Este last Friday.  Junior quarterback Nick Watson accounted for five touchdowns in the win, tossing four TD passes and running for another.  The backfield duo of junior Jeremy Larkin and sophomore Jarell White also got into the action, as each rushed for 100-plus yards and scored a TD receiving and running.

For almost two quarters last Friday, it appeared as though Harrison would make an early postseason exit.  The Wildcats trailed 29-0 with two minutes left in the second quarter before staging a comeback that was capped when senior quarterback Jake Weber scored from a yard out on fourth down as time expired to give Harrison a thrilling 37-36 win over Lima Senior on the road.

The winner advances to the regional final against either Mt. Healthy or Kings, which meet in the other semifinal, at 7:30 p.m. at Lakota West High School.  The two enter their game with perfect 11-0 records after finishing 2-3, respectively, in the final Region 6 Harbin computer ratings.

ST. XAVIER VS. COLERAIN

St. Xavier (9-2), the No. 2 seed in Division I, Region 2, takes a six-game winning streak into the regional quarterfinals against Colerain (8-3) on Saturday night.  Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Hamilton High School’s Virgil Schwarm Stadium.   St. Xavier beat Colerain, 31-12, in week two at St. Xavier, as the Cardinals opened the regular season with losses to La Salle, St. Xavier and Louisville Trinity.  Colerain has not lost since, winning eight games in a row.

The Bombers – like Colerain – are playing their best football of the season.  St. Xavier cruised to an opening 50-13 win over Grove City Central Crossing last Saturday at St. Xavier, a game the Bombers led 44-0 just minutes into the second half.  The Bombers are playing solid defense, led by senior lineman Simeon Lane, and senior linebackers Cole Jones and Justin Hilliard.  St. Xavier will be tested by a Colerain offense that averages better than 350 yards a game.

Colerain advanced with a 28-7 win last week at Hilliard Darby.

MOELLER VS. PICKERINGTON CENTRAL

Moeller, the two-time defending Division I state champion, will meet unbeaten Pickerington Central in a Region 2 quarterfinal matchup Saturday.  Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Welcome Stadium in Dayton.  The Crusaders (8-3) advanced with a 28-7 victory over Miamisburg at Lockland Memorial Stadium last Saturday; Pickerington Central (11-0) kept its perfect season intact with a 7-0 win over Gahanna Lincoln at home.

Senior quarterback Matt Crable has thrown for better than 2,100 yards this season for Moeller.  He hooked up with Kyle Butz and Jake Hausmann for TDs last week in helping the Crusaders win their second straight after dropping three of four games previously.  Moeller’s defense, led by nose guard Elijah Taylor and linebacker Ryan Stofko, held Miamisburg’s option offense to 100 yards on 43 attempts, an average of 2.3 yards per rush.

Moeller played Pickerington Central in the 2011 season opener as part of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown at UC’s Nippert Stadium, posting a 14-0 victory behind a defense that limited the Tigers to 206 total yards and nine first downs.  Quarterback Spencer Iacovone connected with running back Keith Watkins on a pair of TDs passes for all the scoring in the game.
