GCL South Hoop Teams 3-For-3 In Florida Tourneys

It was a successful Monday for GCL South basketball teams participating in Florida holiday tournaments, as Elder remained perfect with a victory in the championship game of the Ft. Lauderdale Holiday Beach Classic, La Salle stayed unbeaten and advanced to the semifinals of the Kingdom of the Sun Invitational in Ocala, and Moeller cruised to a win in the Battle At The Villages showcase in central Florida.

Elder upped its record to 9-0 after connecting on 10 three-point goals in a 65-60 win over host Westminster Academy in the tournament final Monday evening.  Senior guard Brad Miller led the champion Panthers with 18 points, including four three-point goals, while senior guard Kyle Orloff added 14 points and two three-pointers, and junior guard Frankie Hofmeyer chipped in 13 points and two three-pointers.

La Salle used stingy defense to defeat St. Petersburg Gibbs, 44-36, to advance to the semifinals of the Kingdom of the Sun Invitational.  La Salle (6-0) will face Zion Lutheran from Deerfield, Fla. (a 78-66 winner over Orlando Evans Monday) at 8:30 tonight.  The Lancers were led by junior guard Jeremy Larkin, who had 18 points after being named The Enquirer’s Player of the Year in football, and freshman guard C.J. Fleming, who added 16.

Moeller rebounded from a close defeat Saturday at the Battle At The Villages to coast to a 69-35 win over Williston, Fla. yesterday.  Junior guard Trey McBride had a double-double, with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while senior guard Grant Pitman also had 14 points and junior center Sam McCracken added 10.  Junior guard Nate Georgeton had nine of his team’s 22 assists.  Moeller (5-2) will play Taylor County, Ky. at 3:30 p.m. today.

St. Xavier had Monday off before playing two games in the Brebuef High School Jesuit Tournament today in Indianapolis.   The Bombers (4-1) will play Bishop Luers from Fort Wayne, Ind. in the first game, at 12:30 p.m.  If victorious in the opening game, the Bombers will meet the winner of Brebuef Jesuit-Heritage Christian in the final at 7:30 p.m. The consolation game is scheduled for 5:30.
