St. Xavier Wins Pair Tuesday, La Salle Falls At Buzzer

St. Xavier won a pair of games in Indianapolis Tuesday to win the Brebuef Jesuit Tournament, defeating the host school, rallying from a three-point halftime deficit to defeat host Brebuef Jesuit, 43-39, to win its third straight game and up its record to 6-1 heading into the New Year and a pair of touch games this coming week, including the Bombers’ GCL opener against La Salle on Friday night.

Speaking of La Salle, the Lancers lost to Florida power Zion Lutheran at the buzzer in overtime, 48-46, on Tuesday in the semifinals of the Kingdom of the Sun Invitational in Ocala, Fla.  University of Florida commit Keith Stone hit the game winner and finished with 26 points and nine rebounds.  The loss was the first this season for La Salle (6-1), which plays meets West Orange Fla. in the consolation game at 3:30 today.

Sophomore guard C.J. Fleming led La Salle with 14 points, including a three-pointer with 53 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score at 43.  In overtime, senior guard Joey Wenning nailed a three-point shot with 5.5 seconds left to tie the score at 46.

Also on Tuesday, Moeller got 13 points and eight assists from junior guard Nate Georgeton but was victimized by 17 turnovers in a 61-57 loss to Taylor County, Ky. in the Battle At The Villages in Central Florida.  The Crusaders, who also got 12 points from senior guard Grant Pitman and nine points and nine rebounds from sophomore forward Riley Voss, finished 1-2 in the showcase – losing the two games by a combined seven points.

St. Xavier knocked down 11 three-point goals to defeat Bishop Luers from Fort Wayne, Ind., 80-48, in its opener Tuesday.  The Bombers put up a season-high 54 points in the first half. Senior forward James Heskett led a balanced St. Xavier scoring attack with 11 points, including three three-pointers.  Senior center Sam Connaughton added 10 for St. Xavier, which had seven different players hit three-pointers.

In the final, St. Xavier rallied from a 17-14 halftime deficit to claim the four-point win. Senior guard Joe Schroeder led the Bombers with 10 points in the victory, St. Xavier’s sixth in seven games.  Coach Scott Martin’s team returns home to open 2015 with a pair of tough matchups, taking on defending Kentucky state champion Covington Catholic (8-3) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, before hosting La Salle in the GCL South opener on Friday.
