St. Xavier Hoops To Face Tough Interstate Test

St. Xavier, winners of six of its first seven games this basketball season, will be tested tonight when the Bombers face defending Kentucky state champion Covington Catholic in an intriguing interstate matchup at St. Xavier High School’s Berning Gymnasium.  Tipoff is 7:30.

The Bombers (6-1), whose only loss it to Centerville on the road on December 20, have won three consecutive games – the last two victories coming in the one-day Brebuef Jesuit Invitational Tournament last week in Indianapolis.  This is the best start for coach Scott Martin’s team since it won seven straight games to begin the 2013-14 season.  The Bombers finished 15-8 that season.

CovCath (9-3), ranked No. 2 behind Newport Central Catholic in The Enquirer’s Northern Kentucky weekly coaches’ poll, has won four straight games – including a 70-37 win at Highlands last Friday.  CovCath is coming off an historic season, when the Colonels finished 33-2 overall and rallied to defeat Scott County, 59-51, in the Kentucky state championship game at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

The Colonels defeated St. Xavier twice last season, winning 49-35 on January 3 in Park Hills, Ky., and then posting a 63-60 victory in overtime on January 20 at Fairfield high School.  CovCath has won the last three meetings between the schools, with St. Xavier last winning, 46-44, in December 2006.

St. Xavier is the lone GCL South school playing tonight.
