Sophomore guard Cole VonHandorf scored a game-high 17 points to help Covington Catholic, the defending Kentucky state champion, defeat St. Xavier, 51-45, Tuesday night in an intriguing interstate basketball matchup at St. Xavier High School’s Berning Gymnasium.

The win was the fourth straight in the series for the Colonels (10-3), who are ranked No. 2 behind Newport Central Catholic in The Enquirer’s Northern Kentucky weekly coaches’ poll.  CovCath, which has now won five straight games, hit 19 of 32 field goals (59.4 percent) while limiting St. Xavier to just 41.9 percent shooting from the field (18 if 43), including only 5-for-21 from three-point range.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for St. Xavier (6-2), which was led by 10 points from senior guard Joe Schroeder and nine from senior forward James Heskett.  The Bombers next game is Friday, when coach Scott Martin’s team faces La Salle in the GCL South opener for both teams.  Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. at St. Xavier.  La Salle is 7-2 this season, with its only losses coming in the Kingdom of the Sun Invitational in Ocala, Fla.
