La Salle-St. Xavier Tip Off GCL South Hoops Tonight

Posted on 1/9/2015 at 7:50am

The GCL South basketball season officially tips off tonight when La Salle (7-2), ranked No. 5 in The Enquirer’s Division I weekly coaches’ poll, travels down North Bend Road to face St. Xavier (6-2) in the first league game to be played this season.  Tipoff is 7:30 at St. Xavier’s Berning Gymnasium.

La Salle is off to another strong start.  The Lancers only losses are to Florida power Zion Lutheran, 48-46 (2 OT)) and West Orange, 43-35, as part of the Kingdom of the Sun Invitational held in Ocala over the holidays.  La Salle finished fourth in the 16-team field, and sophomore guard C.J. Fleming was named to the all-tournament team.  He averages team highs of 15.3 points and 6.4 rebounds.

St. Xavier also is playing well so far, having won six of eight non-conference games – including winning the one-day Brebuef Jesuit Invitational in Indianapolis on December 30. The Bombers are coming off a close loss to defending Kentucky state champion Covington Catholic, 51-45, on Tuesday night after having won their previous three games.  St. Xavier relies on balanced scoring, with no player in double figures and tough defense.

After tonight’s GCL South opener, La Salle and St. Xavier are back in action Saturday – along with their GCL South colleagues Elder and Moeller.  All four GCL South teams, which enter tonight’s game with a combined 28-8 record this season, play non-conference games Saturday.  Elder (1-0), No. 4 in The Enquirer’s Division I coaches’ poll, looks to reach the halfway point of the season unbeaten.

The Panthers open GCL South play January 16 by hosting Moeller.
