Sophomore guards Tre Crigler and C.J. Fleming combined to score 37 points, and La Salle took advantage of big second and fourth quarters to post a 53-40 victory over St. Xavier in the GCL South basketball opener for both schools Friday night at St. Xavier High School’s Berning Gymnasium.

Crigler led the Lancers (8-2, 1-0 GCL South) with a career-high 19 points, while Fleming scored three more than his season average, adding 18, as La Salle remained unbeaten in six games against Cincinnati schools.  The Lancers trailed 11-4 at the end of the first quarter, but rallied to outscore St. Xavier, 18-6, in the second quarter.  La Salle, ranked No. 5 in The Enquirer’s Division I weekly coaches’ poll, also outscored the Bombers, 17-8, in the fourth quarter.

St. Xavier (6-3, 0-1) was led by senior forward James Heskett, who scored 14 points, and senior guard Jack Westerfield – who added 10.  Heskett and Westerfield each connected on two three-pointers.  The Bombers held La Salle to just 5-for-21 shooting from three-point range, but managed to convert only 12 of 31 field goals (38.7 percent) while committing 13 turnovers.  La Salle committed only three turnovers.
