Elder takes a perfect 12-0 record into its league opener tonight against Moeller, the first of three games in four days for the undefeated Panthers in what is a busy holiday weekend ahead for the four GCL South basketball teams.  Moeller, the two-time defending GCL South champion, enters tonight’s game with a winning streak of its own – having won 16 consecutive league games dating back to February 2012.

Here is a school-by-school look at the GCL South hoops weekend:

Elder – The Panthers open GCL South play against Moeller tonight still unbeaten – thanks to a 43-40 victory over Oak Hills on Tuesday night.  Elder, which also won the Ft. Lauderdale Holiday Beach Classic in late December, is a perfect 5-0 at The Pit.  Junior guard Frankie Hofmeyer leads Elder in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game.  After tonight, Elder, No. 4 in The Enquirer’s Division I weekly coaches’ poll,  will play in the LaRosa’s Hardwood Classic at Fairfield High School over the extended weekend, facing Fairfield at 8 p.m. Saturday and Lakota West at 6 p.m. Monday.

La Salle – The Lancers have yet to lose to a team from Greater Cincinnati, winning all seven games to this point.  No. 5 La Salle (9-2), which hasn’t played since beating Oak Hills, 58-50, at home last Friday, travels to McNicholas tonight for a 7:30 p.m. tip against the GCL Co-Ed Rockets.  The Lancers stay on the road Saturday for a non-conference game against Woodward.  Sophomore guard C.J. Fleming is tied with Elder’s Hofmeyer at 15.6 points game to lead the GCL South in scoring.  Fleming also averages six rebounds a game to rank second in the league, and is fourth with 2.4 assists.

Moeller – The Crusaders are coming off a win over defending Kentucky state champion Covington Catholic on Tuesday, and are looking to try and capture the GCL South championship for the third consecutive season.  No. 9 Moeller (6-5) has been perfect the last two seasons in the GCL, finishing 10-0 in the 2012-13 season and then 6-0 last season.  La Salle is the last GCL South team be bet Moeller, posting a 42-34 win in the final regular-season game on February 17, 2012.  The Crusaders will travel to Toledo on Sunday to face St. John’s Jesujt at 6 p.m.

St. Xavier – The Bombers take a two-game winning streak into tonight’s home game against GCL Co-Ed member Roger Bacon.  Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.  No. 10 St. Xavier (8-3) benefits from balanced scoring, as three players – James Heskett (10.8), Sam Martin (9.7) and Jack Westerfield (8.8) - combine to average 30 points a game.  Martin led the Bombers with 17 points in a road victory at Hamilton Tuesday.  The Bombers, like Elder, will play in the LaRosa’s Hardwood Classic this weekend – playing Lakota West at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Fairfield at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
