Junior guard Frankie Hofmeyer’s basket with 0.4 seconds remaining in overtime gave Elder a 42-41 victory over Moeller in the GCL South opener for both teams Friday night at The Pit and, in the process, moved the Panthers unbeaten streak to 13 games while ending a 16-game league winning streak for Moeller dating back to February 2012 – when La Salle knocked off the Crusaders, 42-34.

Hofmeyer, second in the GCL South in scoring at better than 15 points a game, finished with nine points – none more important than the two he scored after receiving an inbounds pass in the final second.  Junior guard Peyton Ramsey led Elder (13-0 1-0 GCL South) – ranked No. 4 in The Enquirer’s Division I coaches’ poll - with 11 points, while senior forward Grant Pitman paced the No. 9 Crusaders (6-6, 0-1) with 14 points.

Elder’s unblemished record will be tested twice in the next three days, as the Panthers play in the LaRosa’s Hardwood Classic at Fairfield High School.  Elder will face host Fairfield at 8 tonight, and then play the event’s two-time defending champion Lakota West at 6 p.m. Monday.  It doesn’t get any easier for Moeller, either, as the Crusaders travel to Toledo to take on St. John’s Jesuit at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Here is a look at the other GCL South games Friday night:

La Salle 53, McNicholas 45 – Sophomore guard C.J. Fleming, the GCL South leading scorer, hit all three of the Lancers three-pointers and finished with a game-high 23 points to lead La Salle (10-2) to the road victory over GCL Co-Ed member McNicholas.  Fleming was the lone player in double figures for No. 5 La Salle, how a perfect 8-0 against Greater Cincinnati competition.  La Salle has a non-conference game at Woodward at 7:30 tonight.

St. Xavier 54, Roger Bacon 47 – Sam Martin, Jack Westerfield and James Heskett each scored in double figures to help St. Xavier beat GCL South Co-Ed member Roger Bacon and win its third straight.  Martin finished with 16 points, while Westerfield and Heskett added 12 and 11 points, respectively.  N0. 10 St. Xavier also will compete in the LaRosa’s Hardwood Classic at Fairfield, playing Lakota West at 6:30 tonight and Fairfield at 7:30 Monday.
