Panthers Sill Unbeaten, Bombers’ Martin Earns Win No. 300

Guards Brad Miller and Frankie Hofmeyer each scored 11 points to help Elder keep its perfect season alive with a victory over Fairfield in the first game, and then GCL South colleague St. Xavier notched its fourth consecutive win when junior Hunter Lampley tipped in the game-winner with 1.5 seconds against Lakota West in the first of two days of games as part of the LaRosa’s Hardwood Classic Saturday night at Fairfield High School.

Elder (14-0), coming off a 42-41 overtime victory over Moeller in the Panthers’ GCL South opener one night earlier, held a 23-16 halftime edge against Fairfield before outscoring the Indians, 16-4, in the third quarter to put the game away.   Miller knocked down three of five three-pointer for Elder, ranked No. 4 in The Enquirer’s Division I weekly coaches’ poll, while junior Joey Sabato recorded a game-high seven streals.

St. Xavier (10-3) trailed Lakota West, 33-20, at halftime before staging a comeback.  The Bombers were down 58-55 when senior forward James Heskett hit  a three-point goal to tie the game with 21 seconds left.  Then, sophomore guard Sam Martin stole the ball and drove down the court, missing a shot in the final seconds that was tipped in by Lampley for the victory.  Senior guard Joe Schroeder scored 15 points in the second half.

The win was career victory No. 300 for Bombers’ coach Scott Martin.

Elder and St. Xavier also have games scheduled in the event Monday night, with Elder slated to meet Lakota West (4-6) in the first game at 6.  St. Xavier will then play host Fairfield (6-6) in the second and final game, at 7:30.  The two GCL South members have combined to win 16 consecutive games.

La Salle also was victorious Saturday night, posting a 55-42 victory at Woodward.  The win was the  for fourth straight for No. 5 La Salle (11-2), which remains unbeaten in eight games against Greater Cincinnati schools.  Up next for La Salle is a road game at Withrow Tuesday night.  Tipoff is 7:30.

Moeller was the lone GCL South team that did not play Saturday, but the No. 9 Crusaders (6-6) will be tested tonight. Moeller travels to Toledo to face St. John’s Jesuit (9-2), which has won seven consecutive games.  Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.  Moeller won last year’s meeting, 50-39, at Moeller.
