La Salle and St. Xavier posted non-conference basketball victories Tuesday night, extending both school’s winning streaks to six games heading into the first full Friday night of GCL South play.  La Salle had three players score in double figures to key a 74-42 victory at Withrow, while St. Xavier rallied from a 35-22 halftime deficit to hold off Princeton, 68-63, at St. Xavier’s Berning Gymnasium.

Sophomore guard Tre Crigler scored a team-high 13 points to lead La Salle, ranked No. 5 in The Enquirer’s Division I weekly coaches’ poll, against Withrow.  Junior Nick Watson and sophomore Joe Hartmann each added nine as La Salle led 40-20 at the half and improved to 10-0 this season against Greater Cincinnati schools.  La Salle (12-2, 1-0 GCL South) travels to No. 8 Moeller (7-6, 0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.

It wasn’t nearly as easy for St. Xavier to extend its streak.  The Bombers, down 13 at the half, cut the deficit seven entering the fourth quarter before outscoring Princeton, 27-15, in the final eight minutes to win.  St. Xavier was 16 of 20 from the free-throw line in the second half, including a perfect 8-for-8 by senior guard Jack Westerfield in the fourth quarter.  Senior guard Joe Schroeder was 8 of 8 from the line in the second half, 9-for-9 for the game.

Senior James Heskett led No. 10 St. Xavier with 20 points, while Schroeder added 18, Westerfield finished with 13, and junior Johnny Bubenhofer came off the bench to score 10.  The Bombers (12-3, 0-1) travel to The Pit Friday night, where they will attempt to hand Elder (15-0. 1-0) its first loss this season.  The Panthers moved up to No. 2 in The Enquirer’s rankings and are now No. 7 in the Associated Press Division  I state poll.
