Panthers Look to Remain Undefeated, Atop GCL South

La Salle High School basketball coach Dan Fleming is one victory away from career win No. 400 when the Lancers travel to Moeller tonight, while Elder looks to remain undefeated and atop the GCL South standings when the Panthers host St. Xavier in the first full Friday night of GCL South games.

Fleming, who posted seven victories at Taylor High School before taking over the  Lancers’ program in 1990, notched career victory No. 399 with a 75-42 win at Withrow in a non-conference game Tuesday.  Fleming – who took over at La Salle for Hep Cronin – annually has the Lancers competing for GCL South and postseason titles.  La Salle has won two Division I state titles under Fleming, in 1996 and 2011.

La Salle (12-2, 1-0 GCL South) – ranked No. 5 in The Enquirer’s Division I coaches’ poll - is a perfect 10-0 against Greater Cincinnati schools this season.  Moeller (7-6, 0-1) had its 16-game league winning streak snapped last Friday at Elder, 42-41, in overtime.  La Salle is raiding a six-game winning streak, while Moeller is coming off a 51-49 overtime win against St. John’s Jesuit in Toledo last Sunday.

Elder (15-0, 1-0), now No. 2 in The Enquirer’s weekly rankings,  looks to remain unbeaten when it hosts No. 10 St. Xavier (12-3. 0-1) – which is riding a six-game winning streak.  The Bombers, in fact, are coming off three wins against Greater Miami Conference schools in a four-day span Friday through Tuesday – knocking off Lakota West, Fairfield and Princeton.

Coach Joe Schoenfeld’s team is one of four Greater Cincinnati boys’ teams still undefeated.  The Panthers, who have more wins at this point than any other area team, are joined in the unbeaten ranks by Milford (12-0), Wilmington (12-0) and Mason (11-0). Elder is No. 7 in the latest Associated Press Division I state rankings.  After tonight, Elder is off until next Friday, January 30, when the Panthers will travel to La Salle.
