Tonight could go a long way in determining the GCL South champion in basketball this season, as the three teams tied atop the league standings – Elder, La Salle and Moeller – have key matchups heading into the second half of GCL South play.  Elder - off to its best start since the 1971-72 season - travels to Moeller, which has won 24 straight home games, and La Salle looks to keep pace when it hosts St. Xavier.

Elder, La Salle and Moeller are all 2-1 in the GCL South.   The Panthers (17-1 overall), ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press Division I state poll and No. 3 in The Enquirer’s Division I weekly coaches’ ratings, have lost only once – a 61-54 setback at La Salle last Friday.  After a slow start, No. 7 Moeller (11-6) has won five straight games and hasn’t lost a home game since the 2011-12 season.  Elder beat Moeller, 42-41, in overtime in the first meeting this year.

No. 4 La Salle (14-3) also has been playing extremely well of late.  The Lancers have won eight of their last nine games, including the win over Elder.  Led by sophomore guard C.J. Fleming, who leads the GCL South in scoring (16.4) and is third in rebounding (4.8), La Salle defeated St. Xavier, on the road in its GCL South opener, 53-40, on January 9.  No. 10 St. Xavier (12-5) is looking for its first league win.
