St. X Beats Walnut In OT, Moeller Home Streak Ends

GCL South basketball teams won two of three non-conference games Saturday night, as sophomore guard Sam Martin scored a team-high 24 points and senior swingman Josh Theis hit a game-winning shot at the buzzer to lead St. Xavier to a 70-68 overtime victory over streaking Walnut Hills at St. Xavier’s Berning Gymnasium.  La Salle also was victorious Saturday, outscoring Lakota West, 20-2, in the second quarter on its way to a 58-42 win at La Salle’s Bill Cady Gymnasium as the Lancers  have now won 11 of their last 13 games.

It was a tough weekend for Moeller, which entered Friday’s league play having won seven consecutive games but wound up the weekend with a pair of one-point setbacks and the end of a lengthy home court winning streak.  La Salle edged Moeller, 33-32, on Friday to knock Moeller out of first place in the league, and the Crusaders fell to Centerville, 42-41, Saturday on a three-point field goal by the Elks’ Joe Weingartner with six seconds left – ending Moeller’s home court winning streak of 25 games that dated back to February 17, 2012.

St. Xavier was able to end a nine-game winning streak by Walnut Hills, which one night earlier handed Milford its first loss of the season as senior guard MaCio Teague scored career point No. 1,000 with the Eagles.  Teague had a big night against St. Xavier, with 24 points, but the Bombers were able to pull out a win behind Martin – who sank four of the team’s six three-pointers – and senior swingman Josh Theis, who added 12 points that included the game-winner.

The Bombers had  a couple of chances to win the game in regulation, as senior guard Jack Westerfield (who finished with nine points) had two shots go in and out in the final minute, and then St. Xavier had the ball knocked away in the final seconds to make it 62-62 at the end of regulation.  Junior guard Adam Kenkel made four key free throws down the stretch to help his team earn the win.  St. Xavier (14-7, 0-5 GCL South) closes the regular season at Moeller Friday.

La Salle, which managed only eight field goals in the win over Moeller on Friday, started slow again – trailing 10-9 at the end of the first quarter.  But the Lancers took control in the second, and sophomore guard C.J. Fleming wound up with 18 points and three of his team’s eight three-pointers.  Junior guard Jeremy Larkin added 11 points and five rebounds, while senior forward Donte Buycks also scored 10.  La Salle (17-4, 4-1) can win the league championship outright with a victory at Elder (19-2, 3-2) Friday.  Tipoff is 7:30.

Moeller, which took a slim two-point lead to the fourth quarter, was led by 12 points from senior forward Grant Pitman and 10 from junior guard Trey McBride.  Centerville, which was led by a game-high 19 points from Weingartner, including the game-winner, won its fifth consecutive game.  Moeller (14-8, 3-2) can still earn a share of the GCL South title if it wins against St. Xavier Friday, and Elder is able to defeat La Salle – which would then make it a three-way tie for first between Elder, La Salle and Moeller.
