Moeller Finishes Strong Second In Mason DI Sectional

Six-time defending state champion St. Xavier was nothing short of dominating at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Cincinnati Sectional Swimming & Diving Championships that concluded Friday evening at Keating Natatorium on St. Xavier’s campus.  The AquaBombers won seven of the eight individual events, all three relays and the individual diving competition to finish first as a team, with 637 points.  GCL South member schools La Salle was fourth (184) and Elder eighth (112).

Moeller, behind a victorious swim in the 200-Yard Individual Medley and a second-place finish in the 100 Backstroke by junior Cooper Hodge, along with a second-place finish by junior Jacob Peloquin in the  100 Butterfly, finished second behind host Mason, with 371 points.  Moeller also was solid in the relays, finishing third in the 200 and 400 freestyles and winning the 200 Medley with the team of senior Noah Worobetz, Peloquin, Hodge and senior Kevin George.

Sophomore Grant House finished first in two individual events, the 100 and 200 freestyles (which he also won at state last year), while also swimming anchor for the AquaBombers’ winning relay teams in the 200 and 400 freestyles.  Other event winners for St. Xavier were senior Joe Berno (50 Freestyle); senior James Wray (100 Backstroke); sophomore Dillon Froass (100 Breaststroke); sophomore Luke Sobolewski (100 Butterfly); and junior Nate Jones (200 Individual Medley).

The AquaBombers’ team of Wray, Sobolewski, Froass and freshman Nicholas Perera also finished first in the 200 Medley Relay.  Junior Drew Fitzgerald won the 1-Meter Diving, which was held last Tuesday at Miami University.  The lone event that a St. Xavier swimmer did not win was the 400 Freestyle, which was won by Joshua McDonald of Lakota East.  St. Xavier still had the second- and third-place finishers in juniors Matt Slabe and Jones, respectively.

Each of the sectional sites (Centerville, Cincinnati, Mason and Trotwood) will advance two automatic qualifiers to the district meet.  The next 24 at-large also will advance for a field of 32 in the individual events.  For relay events, there will be two automatic qualifiers from each site plus 16 at-large qualifiers for a field of 24 at the district meet.  The Southwest District Swimming & Diving Championships are scheduled this week at Miami University.

In boys’ Division I, the diving finals will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m., with the swimming finals to begin at 10:45 a.m. Saturday.   For complete sectional meet results involving GCL South schools, visit and click on Southwest District Championships, then click Meet Results, and select the Cincinnati Sectional to view results for Elder, La Salle and St. Xavier, or the Mason Sectional to view results for Moeller.
