Elder, Moeller Can Grab Share Of League Crown With Wins

La Salle, which has won 11 of its last 13 games and owns a three-game league winning streak, can win the coveted GCL South basketball championship outright with a victory at Elder Friday night.  However, if Elder defeats the Lancers and Moeller records a home victory over St. Xavier on the final night of the regular season, Elder, La Salle and Moeller will earn a share of the league title.

La Salle (17-4, 4-1 GCL South), which has only lost to Moeller, 42-38, in overtime and Walnut Hills, 48-44, this year, is looking to win its first league crown since the 2011-12 season – when La Salle finished a perfect 10-0 to win the title outright then.  Moeller is the two-time defending champion, posting perfect records each of the last two seasons. The Lancers currently own a one-game lead over both Elder (19-2, 3-2) and Moeller (13-8, 3-2).

In the first Elder-La Salle meeting played at La Salle on January 30, Lancers’ sophomore guard C.J. Fleming and junior guard Jeremy Larkin scored 21 and 17 points, respectively, and combined for eight three-points to lead La Salle.  The Lancers benefited from a 21-9 second quarter to take control.  Elder was led by 18 points from senior guard Brad Miller, one of four double-figure scorers for the Panthers.

Moeller, which has lost its last two games after winning seven straight, will look to start another home winning streak when it host St. Xavier (14-7, 0-5) Friday.   The Crusaders had their 25-game home winning streak snapped last Saturday, a 42-41 loss to Centerville, just one day after La Salle beat Moeller, 33-32, at La Salle to take sole possession of first in the league.  Moeller beat St. Xavier, 39-35, in the first meeting back on January 30.
