Elder outlasted La Salle, 60-59, in double overtime Friday night at The Pit, while Moeller knocked off St. Xavier, 51-43, at home on the final night of play in the basketball regular season – thus creating a three-way tie between Elder, La Salle and Moeller for the coveted GCL South championship.  All three schools finished with 4-2 league records, earning Moeller at least a share of the title for the third straight season.

La Salle (17-5), which narrowly missed winning the title outright, earned a piece of its first GCL South crown since the Lancers finished 10-0 to win the title in the 2011-12 season. Elder (20-2), which opened the season going 16-0 and ended by winning its final three games, claimed a share of its first GCL South championship since the Panthers finished 9-1 in the GCL to tie La Salle for the title, in the 2010-11 season.

Junior forward Nick Hall led Elder with 13 points, while junior guard Joey Sabato added 10 for Elder – which avenged an earlier 61-54 loss at La Salle.  Lancers’ sophomore guard C.J. Fleming scored a game-high 17 to pace La Salle, while juniors Tre Crigler and Jeremy Larkin each added 10.  Fleming also led La Salle with three of his team’s eight three-pointers and five rebounds.

Moeller (14-8), which has won 26 of its last 27 home games, outscored St. Xavier, 24-12, in the second and quarter quarters after trailing by four at the end of the first quarter. Sophomore forward Riley Voss had a double-double for Moeller, scoring 14 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.  Trey McBride and Grant Pitman scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.  Senior guard Josh Theis led St. Xavier (14-8) with 10 points.

It was an impressive regular season for the GCL South teams, who finished a combined 65-23 overall, including a combined 53-11 against non-league competition.  All four schools were ranked this week in The Enquirer’s Division I weekly coaches’ poll – La Salle at No. 4, Elder at No. 5, Moeller at No. 6, and St. Xavier at No. 10.  The GCL South teams are all scheduled to begin postseason play this week.
