AquaBombers Win District; House, Peloquin Each Win Two Events

Sophomore Grant House won the 100- and 200-Yard Freestyle events, and also swam a leg on two of three winning St. Xavier relay teams to help the AquaBombers successfully defend their title at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Southwest Ohio Swimming & Diving Championships, which concluded Sunday at Miami University’s Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford.

St. Xavier won the meet with a team score of 515 points.  The AquaBombers, vying to win their seventh consecutive state title, finished ahead of Centerville, which had 245 points, and GCL South member Moeller, which posted a team score of 229 points and also will send a solid contingent of swimmers to the state meet.  La Salle finished with 24 points to finish at No. 18.

The OHSSA State Swimming & Diving Championships are scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.  State swimming preliminaries will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, with the finals set for 4 p.m. Saturday.  Diving competition will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday.

At the district meet, St. Xavier finished first in five events – with House winning the two freestyle races (which he also won at state last year), and the AquaBombers finishing first in all three relays – the 200 Freestyle (House, Mitchell Frey, Matt Slabe and Grant Carr), in 1:24.88; the 400 Freestyle (Joe Berno, Carr, Liam Moran and House), 3:07.74; and the 200 Medley (James Wray, Luke Sobolewski, Frey and Nicholas Perera), 1:33.30.

Moeller junior Jacob Peloquin had an outstanding meet as well, finishing first in the 100 Backstroke and 100 Butterfly, and then swimming legs on the Crusaders’ 400 Freestyle and 200 Medley relay teams - which finished behind St. Xavier in both races to earn spots at the state meet.  The top two finishers in each swimming event earned an automatic berth at state, along with the fastest 16 at-large times taken from all of four district meets advancing.

Other automatic state qualifiers from GCL South schools are Wray, who finished second to Peloquin in the 100 Backstroke; Moeller junior Cooper Hodge, who finished second in the 200 Individual Medley; and St. Xavier junior Drew Fitzgerald, who claimed the seventh and final automatic qualifying spot in the 1-Meter Diving – finishing with 376.20 points.
