AquaBombers Add To History With State Title No. 36

Sophomore Grant House successfully defended his state titles in the 100- and 200-Yard Freestyle races, and the St. Xavier High School relay teams were again in championship form to help coach Jim Brower’s AquaBombers earn a total of 335 points – more than good enough for St. Xavier to win the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I State Swimming & Diving Championships held Saturday at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

The state crown was No. 36 in St. Xavier’s tradition-laden swimming history, which is more state titles than any other Ohio school In any sport.  Fellow GCL South member Moeller capped its strong season with a second-place finish, totaling 134 points.  And, Girls’ Greater Catholic League member St. Ursula Academy finished second to Upper Arlington in the Division I Girls’ Championships.

Besides House winning his two individual races again, St. Xavier teams won two of three relay races and finished second in a third.  The AquaBombers closed the meet by winning the 400 Freestyle Relay, with Matt Slabe, Grant Carr, House and Mitchell Frey.  St. Xavier’s team of James Wray, Luke Sobolewski, Frey and Joe Berno won the 200 Medley Relay, while St Xavier finished second in the 200 Freestyle Relay.
