Moeller Coming  Off GCL, Sectional Tourney Wins

Fresh off victories in the GCL Wrestling Championships and the Lebanon Sectional Tournament held last weekend, Moeller turns its sights on winning the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I Southwest District Championship when the meet begins Friday afternoon at Kettering Fairmont High School’s James S. Trent Arena.  Wrestling will continue on at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the finals set for 6 p.m.

Moeller, aided by six weight-class champions and one runner-up, finished first with a total of 245.5 points.  La Salle also turned in a strong performance at Lebanon, finishing fifth with 102.5 points as three Lancers won their respective weight classes.  Elder also should be a strong contender at the district meet.  The Panthers came in second in the Hamilton Sectional, with 215.5 points, finishing only behind Mason.

Elder had three of its wrestlers win titles, while five finished in second place.  St. Xavier senior Cole Jones, who was named the GCL South Wrestler of the Year after winning the 220-pound weight class at the GCL Wrestling Championships, won the sectional title, too, via a decision to help the Bombers finish sixth at the sectional, with 109 points.

Here is a look at the sectional champions from the GCL South teams, listed by school and weight class:  Lebanon Sectional / Moeller – Mitchell Moore, 106 pounds; Conner Ziegler, 120; Jacoby Ward, 138; Brett Bryant, 160; Jack Meyer, 220; Joe Hensley, 285.  La Salle – Jared Thiemann, 113; Corey Shie, 132: Andrew Sams, 145.  Hamilton Sectional / Elder – Jake Meridieth, 126; Connor Craig, 145; Mark Adams, 170.  St. Xavier – Jones, 220.
