GCL South Looks To Successfully Defend State Title

Moeller and St. Xavier will attempt to keep the boys’ state volleyball championship in the GCL South when the two schools compete in the Ohio High School Volleyball Association (OHSVBA) State Championship Tournament this weekend at Capital University in Columbus.  GCL members Elder and St. Xavier played for the state crown last season, with Elder emerging victorious.

St. Xavier, which enters play as the state’s top-ranked Division I team, opposes Hilliard Darby at 11:45 Saturday at the Capital Center.  No. 3 Moeller opens the state tournament against Hilliard Davidson at 10 Saturday morning in the state quarterfinals.  Beavercreek will play Lakewood St. Edward at 1:45 Saturday, followed by the final DI match between Centerville and Cleveland St. Ignatius at 3:15.

The semifinal matches are set for 10 a.m. and noon Sunday, with the championship at 4.  GCL South schools have won all but two state crowns since 2003.  Moeller has won the title five times (2004, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2013), Elder has been claimed the crown three times (2008, 2010 and 2014), while St. Xavier has won the title twice (2003 and 2006).

St. Xavier (17-1) enters the state tournament riding a 15-match winning streak.  The Bombers, who defeated Oak Hills in the regional final to earn a berth to state, have not lost since April 10 – when St. Xavier fell to Elder, which was ranked No. 2 in the state in the last OHSVBA poll.  Moeller (20-6) defeated Elder in the regional final, 25-17, 25-17, 16-25, 25-12 to advance to state.
