Headline GCL South Competitors At Regional Meet

La Salle, which captured the GCL South Track & Field Championships two weeks ago and then turned in a dominating performance to win the district title at Winton Woods High School last week (scoring in 15 of 17 events), looks for another impressive showing later today when the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I Regional Track & Field Championships resume at Welcome Stadium in Dayton.

The remaining field event finals begin at 5 p.m. today, followed by the track finals at 6:30.  The top four finishers in each event final advance to the OHSAA Track & field State Championships June 5-6 at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at The Ohio State University.

Elder senior Robby Oswald and La Salle senior Jordan Thompson have both advanced to the state meet after Wednesday’s field event finals.  Oswald finished second in the pole vault (14’8’’), while Thompson came in fourth in the discus (150-05).  Finals also were held Wednesday in the 3200-meter relay, where St. Xavier finished eight and La Salle came in ninth, and the long jump – where La Salle’s Avery Larkin came in eighth.

Thompson is aiming to continue the long tradition at La Salle of throwers advancing in both the shot put and discus – the last being Chandler Burden in 2008.  Burden went on to be the first and only athlete  from Cincinnati to win both the shot put and discus at state on the Division 1 level.

Luke Doerger of La Salle came in third in the discus and fourth in the shot put at last week’s district meet, advancing in both events.  As a result, Thompson and Doerger are the first Lancer duo since Mark Fischer and Jim Gibson accomplished that same feat back in 1993.

St. Xavier also turned in an impressive performance at districts last week, finishing second in the Division I competition held at Mason High School.  Senor Brad Eagan finished first in both the 800- and 1600-meter runs, setting a district meet record in the 800 with a time of 1:53.97.
