St. Xavier, Ohio’s top-ranked Division I team heading into play last weekend, and No. 3 Moeller both had their outstanding seasons come to a close Saturday in the Ohio High School Boys Volleyball Association State Tournament at Capital University in Columbus – meaning that the GCL South will not win a volleyball state championship for only the third time since 2003.  Elder was the defending Division I champion.

The Bombers, who entered play riding an 18-match winning streak, was knocked out in its quarterfinal match by Hilliard Darby – which went on to win the state crown.  Darby defeated St. Xavier in five sets, 25-16, 13-25, 15-25, 25-21, 15-10.  Moeller started Saturday by beating Hilliard Davidson in straight sets, 25-22, 25-17, 25-16, before losing a marathon match to Beavercreek in the semifinals, 22-25, 19-25, 31-29, 25-21, 15-5.

It was an outstanding volleyball season for the GCL South, with St. Xavier, Elder and Moeller holding down the state’s top three spots in the last rankings, as well as those same positions in the regional poll.  St. Xavier finishes at 19-2 (6-1 in the GCL South), with Elder at 21-5 (4-2) and Moeller at 21-7 (3-4).  That’s a combined record of 61-14 for the league’s top three teams.
