Crusaders Impressive In Final To Win Third State Title In Four Years

Senior right-hander and University of Missouri signee Grant Macciocchi tossed a three-hitter over five innings, and also went 3-of-4 with four RBI, to lead Moeller to a 16-0 victory over Westerville Central Saturday morning in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I baseball state championship game at Huntington Park in Columbus.

The victory earned Moeller its eighth state baseball title, the fourth in coach Tim Held’s tenure, and the third crown in the last four years.  Moeller (31-3, which also won ran its winning streak to 10 games, won state championships in 2012 and 2013 and advanced to the state semifinals last year.  The Crusaders also won the state title in 2009 under Held – who tied legendary coach Mike Cameron with four state titles each.

Cameron led Moeller to its first state baseball crown in 1072.

Macciocchi gave Moeller a 1-0 lead with an RBI triple in the third inning, but the Crusaders left no doubt in their next two at bats – scoring six times in the fourth and then adding nine runs in the fifth.  Seniors Eric Connor (3-4), Kyle Dockus (3-3) and Josh Hollander (3-4) each had three hits and two RBI for Moeller, which also stole seven bases in the win.
