Deters Shuts Down Upper Arlington In Second Half For

St. Xavier was in an uncustomary position at halftime of Saturday’s Ohio High School Lacrosse Association Division I state championship game – the Bombers were trailing.  After outscoring its opposition by a combined 68-11 in postseason play entering the final, St. Xavier responded to rally from a 6-3 deficit at the intermission to not all allow another goal and score four times to defeat Upper Arlington, 7-6, to win the state title.

Senior Jack Perez’ goal off an assist from senior William Holcomb with four minutes remaining proved to be the game winner, snapping a 6-6 tie, and junior  goalie Alex Deters and the Bombers’ defense did the rest to give St. Xavier a one-goal victory over the defending DI state champion at New Albany High School in Columbus yesterday afternoon.  Coach Nate Sprong’s team also defeated UA, 10-3, during the regular season.

The Bombers, who finish their season with an 18-5 record, were led by four goals from senior Jack Green.  Senior Matt Donnelly, junior George Thurner and Perez each scored one goal for St. Xavier.  Deters was named the game’s defensive MVP, while the following Bombers were named to the OHSLA All-State Teams:  Holcomb (first team); Griffin Buczek, Nathan Kiniyalocts, David Leisring, Jack Waters, Deters and  Donnelly (second team).
