GCL South Teams Prepare To Face Top Competition This Weekend

Greater Catholic League members Elder and La Salle, off to impressive starts this season, are ranked No. 1 in their respective divisions in the first Associated Press state football rankings that were released earlier this week.  Elder is No. 1 in the Division I rankings of a state panel of sportswriters and broadcasters, while defending state champion and unbeaten La Salle is No. 1 in the Division II state poll.

After opening with three lopsided wins, outscoring its opponents, 125-48, Elder will look to remain atop the big-school division when it travels to meet defending state champion and current No. 3 Lakewood St. Edward (2-1) on Saturday night.  Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Baldwin Wallace University.  La Salle (3-0), which has won 11 straight games and earned 21 of 23 first-place votes, hosts Christian Brothers (3-0) from Memphis, Tenn. at noon Saturday.

Joining Elder in the Division I state poll is St. Xavier (2-1), No. 9 after its impressive win last Friday over previously undefeated Mentor, 59-13.  St. Xavier hosts Indianapolis Cathedral (3-1) – the five-time defending Indiana Class 5A state champion - at 7 tonight, while unranked Moeller (2-1) – which knocked off Cathedral, 21-19, in its season opener - faces perennial national power Don Bosco Prep, N.J. (1-1) at 7 tonight at Lockland Stadium.
