St. Xavier Wins Cincy West Sectional, all league teams qualify

Greater Catholic League South Division champion St. Xavier posted a team low score of 297 last Wednesday at Miami Whitewater Golf Course to finish two strokes ahead of Elder and La Salle, as the league claimed the top three spots in the Cincinnati West Sectional Tournament to advance to Thursday’s  Ohio High School Athletic Association Southwest District Division I Tournament at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown.

Moeller, the lone GCL South school that participated in the Cincinnati East Sectional last Tuesday at Glenview Golf Course, finished third to also earn one of the 16 team entries into the district event.  The top four teams from each of the sectionals (including Dayton and Springfield sites) advance to the district tournament, which is set to begin at 9 a.m. Thursday and conclude that same day after 18 holes of competition.

La Salle and Moeller are set to tee off at 9 on the Woodside course, before moving to the Highlands nine for the back side.  Each team’s No. 5 golfer begins play, followed in order by the remaining four players with rounds scheduled for every 10 minutes in order.  St. Xavier and Elder are set to tee off at 9:50, with the Bombers playing the course in that same order; Elder will play Highlands first, followed by Woodside.

The top three finishing teams, and the top three individuals not on those teams with low scores, advance to the OHSAA State Tournament set for October 23-24 at The Ohio State University Scarlet Course in Columbus.  Play begins on October 23 at 9 a.m.  Moeller is the defending Division I state champion, posting a two-day score of 636 last October to win last year’s event by nine strokes.  St. Xavier finished eighth.

GCL golfers dominated the Cincinnati West Sectional, recording the top 11 scores – led by La Salle junior Patrick Miller, who claimed medalist honors after firing a 1-under 70 at Miami Whitewater.  Elder freshman Jack Wertz was just three strokes off the pace, finishing with a 73, and a trio of St. Xavier golfers – seniors Kirran Magowan and Domenic Maricocchi, and sophomore Michael Prebles tying for third best, with rounds of 75.
