Magowan Repeats As Medalist, Bombers Off To State Tourney

Senior Kirran Magowan fired a 2-under 34 on the back nine Thursday, finishing at even-par 72 at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown to claim medalist honors for the second straight year and help St. Xavier successfully defend its championship at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I Southwest District Tournament.  The Bombers also were victorious in the Cincinnati West Sectional one week earlier.

St. Xavier, which also won the GCL South title this season, advances to the OHSAA Division I State Tournament to be played Friday and Saturday at The Ohio State University Scarlet Course in Columbus.  The Bombers are looking to improve on their eighth-place finish a year ago, while defending state champion and GCL colleague Moeller narrowly missed a return trip to state – finishing fourth in the district event with a 313.

It was a solid day all around for the Greater Catholic League South Division teams, as the four schools claimed four of the top seven spots.  La Salle turned in a team score of 314 to finish fifth, one shot behind Moeller, and Elder came in seventh with a 320.  Moeller senior Jake Fox finished with a 2-over 74, finishing fifth, and qualified for the state tournament as an individual.

The Bombers were tied for fifth place at the turn of the district tournament, and would need a strong finish on the back nine Highlands course to advance to the state tournament.  The top three teams advance to state.  That is exactly what coach Alex Kepley’s team got, as Magowan led the charge by firing a 2-under 34 to go along with his 2-over 38 on the front nine to finish even at 72, finishing as district medalist again.

St. Xavier fired a 147 on the back nine, with Michael Prebles shooting 37, Zachary Pavlin and Cameron Frazier shooting 38s, and Domenic Maricocchi finishing with a 41 for the Bombers.  In all, St. Xavier finished with a team score of 304 – six shots ahead of runner-up Centerville (310) and Springboro (311) – which both qualified for state.  Moeller wound up fourth with a 313.

If St. Xavier is victorious at the state tournament, it would give the Bombers state championship No. 50 in its rich athletic history.  St. Xavier is currently tied with Lakewood St. Edward for the most team titles in OHSAA state tournament history.  The Bombers will head to Columbus Thursday for a practice round in preparation for Friday’s first round of competition.
