St. X, Moeller Set For NE Ohio DH Saturday Afternoon

Elder and La Salle kick off the Greater Catholic League South Division football weekend by hosting non-conference games tonight, while St. Xavier and Moeller will be featured on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel as part of a SW vs. NE Ohio doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Greater Cleveland.

The GCL South weekend begins with a pair of games tonight, including Elder (5-3) looking to get back on track against DePaul Catholic, N.J. (2-4).  Kickoff is 7 p.m. at The Pit in Price Hill.  Since its double overtime victory at St. Xavier three weeks ago, the Panthers have dropped two straight games – including a 14-0 loss at Winton Woods last week.  Elder entered that game averaging 38.1 points per game.

La Salle (7-1) will attempt to slow Winton Woods (5-2), which has won four consecutive games after losing to Mason earlier this season.  The Lancers are coming off a lopsided win over Columbus St. Charles Prep last Friday night, when senior running back Jeremy Larkin scored five touchdowns, four rushing and one receiving.  Larkin leads the GCL South in scoring, with 19 total TDS and 122 points.  Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Lancer Stadium.

Saturday, two GCL South teams will be featured on TWC SportsChannel when St. Xavier and Moeller travel to Northeast Ohio.  St. Xavier (5-3), coming off a 28-21 loss last Friday at Warren Central, Ind., faces Cleveland St. Ignatius (5-3) in the first game, at 2 p.m. at Byers Field in Parma.   St. Ignatius is attempting to rebound from a 55-52 loss against Moeller last Saturday, a game the Crusaders trailed 38-14 in the second quarter before rallying.

Moeller (4-4) will then face Lakewood St. Edward (7-1), the defending Division I state champion and the state’s No. 1-ranked team in the Associated Press DI state rankings. Kickoff is 5 p.m. at Lakewood High School.  Moeller has two straight games to jump back into the postseason picture, sitting at No. 16 in this week’s Region 2 Harbin computer ratings – with the top 16 teams in Regions 1 and 2 advancing to the playoffs.

Both games will be shown live on TWC SportsChannel, the official broadcast partner of the GCL South.
